Color Destination: Charleston

This summer we wanted to feature a few colorful destinations from around the world. We thought we’d start with Charleston, South Carolina, another jewel of the South that reminds many of New Orleans.

It wasn’t surprising to learn that the city has been voted one of the most colorful cities in the world. From the pastel houses found on Rainbow Row to the vivid greens and blues found along the Carolina coast, Charleston has a unique color palette of it’s own.

The colors in these photos could be inspiration if you’re thinking about using color on your home’s exterior instead of a neutral.  If you’re thinking of about painting your home, a designer can work closely with you and your painter to help select the perfect hue.

Take a look and see how the city of Charleston lives up to it’s reputation of being one colorful destination.

Design Trend: Rustic Décor

The heat and humidity in New Orleans can be so bad that we find ourselves spending more time indoors, which can lead to some serious cabin fever. Luckily I have been daydreaming about spending some quality time in the rustic style homes. I love a mountain retreat this time of year!

Take a look at these rustic decor ideas to help bring a little cabin living to your everyday life.

Keep things cool in your kitchen with this stone facade and exposed wooden beams.

I love the use of chicken wire for the built-ins and the white cowhide tablecloth. Very rustic indeed.

Colorful Kitchen Backsplashes

Add drama and interest to your kitchen with a colorful kitchen backsplash.

A “splash” of color is exactly what is needed in these all-white kitchens.

Bastille Day- French Inspired Design

Joyeux Quatorze Juillet, or as we Americans say, Happy Bastille Day! This Saturday, July 14th, the French celebrate the storming of the Bastille, which marked the beginning of the French Revolution.

Bastille Day is also celebrated here in New Orleans, after all La Nouvelle-Orléans is named after Philippe d’Orléans, Duke of Orléans, Regent of France.

So today, in celebration of our French heritage I wanted to highlight some French-inspired design.

Style Watch: Ric Rac

Maybe your grandmother sewed it on a summer outfit for you as a child or you had ric rac bedding, either way this popular 1970s pattern is gaining popularity in the 21st century.

The ric rac trend is a great way to add color, pattern, and texture to a room. Take a look at today’s version of ric rac.

Schumacher’s Ric Rac fabric in Midnight is a great geometric pattern for your home.

This ric rac design looks great on pillows as well.

Kerri McCaffety’s New Orleans New Elegance

Award-winning photographer Kerri McCaffety’s newly released “New Orleans New Elegance” takes a look inside the city’s “most innovative and iconic interiors in a quest to define the essence of the unique New Orleans style.” From the “grandeur of the Greek revival architecture” to an “infusion of contemporary energy,” McCaffety captures the essence of New Orleans beautifully through the lens of her camera.

For those of you who love New Orleans as much as I do, you’ll be in awe of Kerri’s take on a post-Katrina city.  I recently had the good fortune to hear her speak at Margarita Bergen’s Round Table Luncheon at the Royal Sonesta.

According to Amazon, “More than forty houses and apartments are featured from all parts of the city—the French Quarter, the Warehouse District, the Garden District, and the multiple neighborhoods that comprise Uptown.”

“Kerri’s work is lush with natural light that makes the images sensual and rich, and transforms the places she photographs into poems.”
