Freshening Up for Summer

Summer is here! The days are deliciously long, and we’re excitedly planning barbecues, hikes, and beach days with friends. At home, we’re freshening up, to make our space feel bright, airy, and as summery as possible. Here are our tips:

Open the windows!
If your climate allows, get some cross breeze going inside the house. The fresh air will smell great and you’ll appreciate the beautiful weather even while doing productive things inside.

Roll up rugs
In the winter, we love the warmth and cozy feel that rugs offer. In the summer, bare floors can feel cooler and more appropriate. Roll up small area rugs and put them in the attic until Labor Day.

Bring plants outside
Your tropical houseplants would love a summer vacation on your porch or deck. The rain water will do them good, and the house will feel more summery without leaves in every corner.

Trade pillows
Many people use throw pillows for a pop of color. If that’s true for you, swap those pillows out! Save the navy blue and burgundy for the colder months; find yourself some bright white, sunny yellow, or aqua throw pillows for the coming season.

Swap out bedding
Put the heavy comforter in the closet, and bring out a lighter-weight quilt or coverlet for the warmer season. If you keep several throw blankets on hand in the living room, feel free to stash those in the cupboard, too. The fewer bulky textiles we have around right now, the lighter our homes will feel.

Dress the table
Jute placemats or wicker chargers will instantly change the feel of your dining or breakfast table. And, as always, fresh flowers on the table will bring a bit of the beautiful outdoors inside.

Woven chargers will bring instant ‘summer’ to your dining table.

Accessorize
To take the summer vibes one step further, bring in seasonal accessories. Replace your heavy brass bookends with large seashells, exchange dark coffee table books for colorful alternatives, and add some woven baskets. When we have bright and light-weight items to gaze at in our homes, we’ll feel in the spirit of the season.
